A Conversation with Casting Director Karoline Matheis

I had the pleasure of chatting with Karolina Matheis, the brain behind Mathies Premium Casting Agency in Berlin, one of Europe's top commercial casting agencies.

Karolina's journey is pretty inspiring. She started in the music industry at Rolling Stone magazine but quickly realized that lifestyle wasn’t for her. She shifted gears to marketing and performing arts and with help from friends and a key mentor, she built her business from the ground up. This gave her more control and stability. Since then, she’s nailed some stellar projects with icons like Robbie Williams and Martin Scorsese, and continues to score really fun, major campaigns with names you would definitely recognize.

We talked a lot about the importance of self-presentation for actors. Karolina emphasized always putting your best foot forward in self-tapes and headshots. Karolina stressed that actors should always hone their craft, embrace their unique flair, and become market-savvy to thrive in this competitive space.

Karolina views thousands of auditions every year, so when she says something, we should listen. Her big tip: try not to follow the rules and be unconventional — that’s what will get you noticed.

It was a rich exchange of insights with actionable advice and you won’t want to miss it. Check out the interview and see for yourself.
